This is truly an unusual rescue story. According to the StarTribune.com. Gwen Beberg, a US soldier in Iraq and her fellow soldiers found a puppy they named Ratchet in a trash heap in May. Gwen decided to adopt the 6 month old puppy despite Army regulations forbidding soldiers serving in Iraq from keeping pets.

The Star Tribune states

Terri Crisp, coordinator for the U.S. rescue program Operation Baghdad Pups, sent the e-mail from Iraq, where she took custody of Ratchet for his long-awaited trip to Spring Lake Park. It was the third attempt to rescue the black-and-white mutt.

“It feels wonderful,” Beberg said.

Crisp and Ratchet boarded a plane about 2:30 p.m. Minnesota time. They were to fly overnight from Baghdad to Kuwait to Amsterdam, arriving in Washington, D.C., this afternoon on a flight donated by Northwest Airlines, said Stephanie Scroggs, spokeswoman for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals International.

In the Las Mesilla Valley of New Mexico Pet Euthanasia is still very high. Roughly two thirds of the 1,500 animals taken in every month are euthanized. The Las Cruces Sun News states That:

Despite a goal by officials to move toward a no-kill animal shelter, the pet euthanasia rate at the Animal Services Center of the Mesilla Valley is more than 70 percent.

That means about three out of four of the roughly 1,500 animals taken in per month are killed.

Survey those with ties to the shelter about why the rate is so high and be prepared for a spectrum of responses.

The Springfield-Greene Animal Shelter has changed it’s policies and will allow rescue groups from Missouri to take animals before they are euthanized.

The News-leader.com in Missouri reports that “some rescuers say a more effective method would be to open adoptions entirely — to both rescue groups and the public, a policy that has been embraced by many municipalities.

“They don’t allow public adoptions,” said Susan Stewart, a Kansas City rescuer. “None of us can figure that out. … When they refuse to allow people in your area or anywhere to come in there and select a puppy to take home, it encourages puppy mills and things like that because you have to go get your dog somewhere else.”

It’s a shame that so many dogs are being euthanized when ther are so many families willing to adopt these pets. The article above alos states that through the end of September, the shelter had impounded 3,715 animals - 2,012 of which were euthanized.

Hopefully the shelter will change it’s adoption further to allow for more individuals to adopt these dogs.

In Newark there is great concern about the treatment of animals by the Licking County Animal Shelter. According to an article published in the Advocate Reporter “Representatives of several animal rescue groups have complained to the county commissioners for several years typically about dogs that are deemed aggressive being put down.

According to several of the complaints, many of these dogs might not be aggressive but instead scared.”

Several concerned citizens including Paul Evans, President of the Second Chance Humane Society expressed concern of how animals were being put down by officials from the humane society. Apparently it is pretty much a judgment call as how officials determine whether an animals behavior poses a threat.

You can read the entire story at the Newark Advocate.com. There is also a great amount of activism by the local community.

It’s good to know that in this world there are a number of great non profit organizations that are dedicated to the protection and well being of rescued pets. Safe Haven Animal Sanctuary is a 501(C)(3) non profit organization dedicated to the protection and care of ll animals. It is a “no kill” facility. Their belief is that no animal shall be homeless, hungry, live in fear or pain.

Their website states that: The Sanctuary is a ‘no kill’ facility staffed entirely by volunteers who are deeply dedicated to the care and well being of special needs animals. All funding comes through your donations and corporate sponsorship You can also contribute to this organization by going to the website listed above and clicking on the tab that says “donate”.

It’s very important that you take care when approaching a stray dog or pet. The pet could be injured or sick. If you suspect that the pet has been injured or is ill in any way, you should immediately contact your city’s animal control center or your local law enforcement agency to inquire as to where to call for appropriate help. You should consider the possibility that the pet may have an illness and you should approach the stray pet cautiously. Of course you want what’s best for the pet but you should also exercise good judgement. The dog could be scared an confused. If the pet appears to be healthy and is just lost or abandoned you may have the opportunity to rescue the lost pet and provide him with a good home with you or someone else who may be a truly concerned and caring person when it comes to animals. There are many good organizations like The Safe Haven Animals Sanctuary.org that rescues and finds caring homes for these rescued pets.
